Chapter 5

“Let’s go through the coffee shop,” he said, as we pulled up in front of my building. I raised an eyebrow at him, but nodded, flipping on the lights as I unlocked the door.

“Ah,” he said, moving at once to the large painting that was on the side wall, behind the big, long couch. “I’ve been wanting to see this with the lights on,” he said with a smile.

I eyed the painting that was occupying his attention. I’d painted it about six months after I’d moved to Liverpool. The first, deep, initial pangs of homesickness for Toronto had passed, the nightmares had stopped, and I’d finally felt like I’d settled into my life. The painting was colourful and cheerful. To me, it always exuded hope.

“Did you paint this, Tessa?” he asked me, and I nodded. “You are very good,” he complimented me. “Ever thought about painting fulltime?”

“It isn’t for me,” I said. “I have thought about it. I’ve sold only one painting in my life, and honestly, it was such a struggle to let it go. It felt like I was carving out a chunk of me.”

He looked at me intently, then back at the painting. “Tell me what you were thinking when you painted it,” he prompted.

“Yes, my Lord and Master,” I quipped, and his lips twitched. “It was a few months after I got to Liverpool, and I was finally getting comfortable and content again. I was just happy – it was spring, and the air that swept in from the sea just felt hopeful, you know? Like the way everything feels after a good, deep rain?”

“A promise of a new start,” he replied. He smiled. “I can relate. That’s how each new movie is, when you first get filming. Like a blank canvas, onto which you can pour anything.”

I looked at him. He was a lot more thoughtful about his work than I would have expected a famous Hollywood star to be. But then again, I didn’t know any actors, and it wasn’t fair of me to judge them based on what appeared in the tabloids.

“Does it feel hard then, at the end of the movie, to let it go?” I asked him.

He looked thoughtful. “There’s other people involved in a movie, so it’s a bit of a collective release, I guess,” he said. “I don’t shape it in isolation, not the way you do when you paint.” He reached out and pulled me next to him, and put an arm around my waist, bending to kiss my neck. “I believe you promised me a drink, Tessa,” he said, his lips warm against my ear.

Desire danced within me. Every muscle in my body clenched with sweet longing at his nearness, at the heat emanating from his body, at the sound of his voice.

“Upstairs,” I choked out. He flipped out the lights in the coffee shop, and just like yesterday, we climbed the stairs to my apartment in the dark.

“Want to play a game, Tessa?” he asked me, looking over the rim of the glass of red wine I’d handed him.
